do they make UV rated safety glasses?
they where safety glasses/sunglasses,oh and thanks for the headsup on those uv lights, hope your feeling better

Usually you see lots of warning labels and signs around those type of lamps,
we have a company here in town that installs that type of lamp in both commercial and residential air handlers.
The rig comes with a switch that kills power to the UV lamps when the cover is removed. Its supposed to kill any germs or spores that pass near it.
Lots of labels involved in the installation

I am back to work today after a co-worker and I did some work at a waste water plant on UV lights. We were there to replace the lamp covers on a set of UV lights for the plant.

You replaced the covers with the power on?

I have had a lot of training on the UV lights. They have to be covered with water any time they are on or they will over heat and damage them. They have interlocks that will shut them down when the rack is removed from the channel.

If you are going to be around them while they are on you need special UV safety goggles, plus a UV face shield! NO Sunglasses! All body parts need to be covered, you can get 2nd and 3rd degree burns on any exposed skin.

PS The UV doesn't kill the bugs, it sterilizes them so they can't reproduce.

During job briefs we get Operator Experience (OE) on what hazards that could happen during the job. One of the best tools to keep you safe.

Thanks for sharing.

I have seen UV rated safety glasses at one of the big box stores - but can't remember which one. Imagine both have them. Also think I saw them in a Grainger catalog.

No. We turned the lights on to check before placing them back in the tank. One actually had a bad socket and the second had a problem 'warming up." I think that is where the damage occured because we (ignorantly) waited for the lamp to come completely on before placing back in the tank. Unfortuneately this is new to rare business for us and thankfully did not pay a heavy learning price. Thanks for the well wishes and I hope this discussion prevents the same thing happening to somebody else.

I wonder if the auto-dakening welders shield would help? They sell for about $40 at harbor freight.

Doubt it. The light from uv lamps would not be strong enough to activate the lens. It takes the bright flash to darken the lens
