Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

Look at the first page of the 2002 edition for the previous printings which include 42 & 43.

I have not been able to find these either. :(

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

Roger,

Thanks for that reference. I'd not paid attention to it before. What a convoluted publishing history.

It's interesting to note that the NEC was published, on average, every other year from 1897 through 1953,

And then it was published every year for seven years straight in the 1950s.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

I have a 1947 code book and inside it states that the 1947 supersedes the 1940 and interm amendments.I have never seen any that were printed during World War 2.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

According to the 1993 NEC there was a 1942 & 1943 version. Then it jumped to 1947. This might just be an error in the 93 edition.

Also I find it strange that none of my handbooks, starting in 1987, have the years of publishing.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

My copy of the 2002 NEC Handbook has, on its title page, a statement that it was copyrighted in 2002. By definition, that is its year of initial publication.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

My company has a "National Electric Code Handbook" published by Mcgraw-Hill. I'm not sure if it is an official NEC publication or not. The copywrite dates are 1940, 41,42 and 1943. Yet, even in 1943, it says it is based on the 1940 NEC.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

As I recall we were all still reeling from the great ink shortage of '43 when it came time for the '44 code. Crazy times those '40's

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

Steve, the Handbook was published by McGraw-Hill up until about 1970 (I don't know the exact date), but that was the official handbook until NFPA decided to publish it, themselves.

Actually I believe McGraw-Hill continued to publish an equal, but no one would buy their version.

Jerry,

Actually a lot of people bought the McGraw-Hill handbook and when Joe McPartland was the editor I found it to be far superior to the NFPA one.

Re: Was there a 1944 Code Book

When I first started as an electrican, I was a helper on a well drilling rig. I had a lot of time while while the well was being drilled (cable tool-mashes the material with a bit). I read the McPartland handbook from cover to cover. it was the best education I could ever get. Joe P gave Mike Holt his first big break. He is still around and is a recording artist of Irish music.
