Here is a new one for me.

We have an apartment building that is going to have 20 cloths washers back to back with a trench drain in between them.

The owner just wants to install the outlets on one side of the trench drain and run the cords over the trench drain to serve the washers on the other side.

I assume that this would not be allowed by the NEC but I can not find it anywhere.

If he held up the cords some how mabe that would work?

I just cant see having the cord sitting in the drain as being a good thing.

Another thing I think would work to is to cover the drain in a few place to the cord has a place to lay.

We got nail on something like this in a garage about 20 years ago but I dont recall the issue there.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Jay

You should be able to support the cords in some reasonable fashion. Make sure they don't turn into permanent wiring by attaching them to the structure. Bridle rings have a threaded stud end on them. You could put thread anchor into the slab each side of the trench, screw a bridle ring into that, and thread the cord thru the rings. Something like that, should keep it out of the liquid below.

If I understand your post and the cords are not being used per 400.8....:-?

After looking at some cords it looks like it a type SPT-1, and that cord is listed for a damp location only.

So I would say its not safe to lay on top a trench drain or listed for that use.

Thanks Jay

I got the Owner/Architect to change the trench drain to have a hard top with just holes for the drain pipe to go in. I thinking that should work.

Thanks All

That is weird, your link does point out as being lamp cord. I can not find any information on the WEB of any washers for the cord type, I will see if I can find a replacement part at the parts store.

I could of wrote down the wrong number from the one I looked at. Here is the full number that I wrote down.

IULI VW-1 647523 IMI SPT-3 373105-C GREEN CONDUCTOR FOR GROUNDING ONLY REGISTERED TRADE MARK FTIFT2 LL20332(M)

I assumed it was a type SPT-3 as thats the only matching number I could find in the code book! But as your link shows that does not look right at all.
