Hello I am in the process of preparation for the Washington state admin test (01 General) and would like to hear from some one that has taken it lately (last 6 months of so)

Would like to get some feed back as to what I should be studying on.

I am wondering what type of load calc's they might be asking.

I took the exam further back than 6 months, but I don?t think it will have changed much. I recall one or two questions related to simple, basic residential service calculations. I think there might have been a special application of a demand factor, such as an RV park or a marina, but I don?t recall for certain.

The area that gave me the most trouble was the administrative and safety rules. They had recently changed to a new version of the references, and I brought in the older references. Make sure you contact the L&I office nearest you, and verify that you have the right materials. I believe you can get them for free.

My suggestion is to be thoroughly familiar with where information is located within each reference book (including the NEC) that you bring into the test. Put yellow stickers or other markers on the key pages, and label them with their subject (e.g., ?Ladder rules,? or ?License Renewal,? or ?Penalties for Violations?).

I had taken a review course some months before I took the test. I studied my notes from that course. Also, when I registered to take the test, the WA Labor & Industries people told me what references were to be covered in the test, and gave me a free copy. I studied them. The references included the applicable sections of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and some rules about safety. Finally, I reviewed the NEC. In particular, I did several practice problems on load calculations, conduit fill, and box fill.

I don?t think my time spent on any of these review materials was wasted, as there were questions on the test from all of them. For example, there were questions related to WAC rules about getting and renewing a license, working under the supervision of a licensed electrician, and fines for violating the license rules. There were questions from the safety book about the use of ladders (max ladder height, max weight for a person climbing the ladder, how close the foot of the ladder must be to the wall, and stuff like that).

You can bring in your own references to the test. I suggest marking key pages with yellow stickers, so that you can go directly to a page without thumbing through the book.

What review course did you take, I am in the greater Seattle/Tacoma, and what books did you study with. I just purchased and recieved the Exam Prep Book and Master Simulated Exam ? 2002 from Holt and have been working on it for couple of days now, good stuff.

I do have the WAC rules but I really have not looked into it yet, I am mostly focusing of load calc and what not, so they become second nature.

I would really be interested to know what review course you did and where in our area.

I took a review course through the ?Construction Industry Training Council,? in Bellevue. Look under CEU Classes, Electrical, at their web site.

i took and passed the washington state admin test about 3 month ago. i used the same books ( mike holt)it took me every minute to complete each part of the test. on my test the calc questions were 2 multifamily optional and 2 standard calc questions, one commercial building question, and 2 motor questions they all want minimum amp load. the administration test was the toughest for me i couldn't find half the question they asked in the wac rules i know there in there i read them but looking them up at test time was frustrating (the index is screwed up)so study the wac rules and good luck

I had the same experience on my first try. But on my second try, this time successful, it helped me to do what I have already suggested you do: Mark key pages in your copy of the WAC with yellow sticker labels or some kind of tabs, so that you can more quickly find what you need.

I agree the wac rules are tough. I have been reviewing them in preperation for a RCW_WAC changes class (4 hours) which will be required for electrical certification renewal in washington state after Jan 1, 2004.

The WAc rules are tough but really all you need to do is have them in a binder with the index up front and it is easy to find stuff as long as you know the topic the question comes from. I am trying to pass section 3 still of my admin for residential. (see my post in the calculation part of the forum.) Has anyone taken the WAC update online class yet?
