Thankfully, I've always gotten notice at the very least day before. That's a toss-up on whether I'd rather have the convenience of knowing beforehand or 2hrs pay just for showing up.......hmmmm.

Many times, in order to "collect" the full 2 hours - you are required to be "available" for those 2 hours.
If you were to leave before the 2 hours, you would get only the hours you "worked"/ were on-site.

If life was fair and easy, it would be boring as well. I have had issues with employers and employees, customers, building officials, bankers, insurance people, customers, did I mention customers, suppliers, material, partners, payments, no money...you name it and I have had to deal with it over the last 34 years.

With that said, the best rule I have learned (and it was a learning experience...) in coping with any of the above mentioned situations is to not loose my temper. Make no decisions when mad and learn that it if it is not going to affect my life in 20 years from now, it is not enough to frazzle me.

Well said. I agree.

In all fairness, sometimes things happen at the spur of the moment. For instance I have one GC who is notorious for calling me at the last minute and changing the schedule or cancelling a job. I have had to reverse directions on my guys lots of times. It's a good thing this guy doesn't get any other bids :) So it is possible that the bossman got the cancellation call only minutes before you showed up. Also I don't care who you are, you can't tell me as someone said earlier that there hasn't been days when you just didn't give it 100%. I like to think of my business as a team, where each person involved has a task and a position, and if it's always going to be all take and no give, then it might as well be me vs. my employees. I know when I sit down at Christmas time to ponder Christmas bonuses, I try and think back over the whole year about each employee (currently 10 of them) and remember what that person did above and beyond the call of duty and if someone would have said to me "Hey boss don't worry about paying me the stupid 2 hours I understand those things happen", that person's bonus just got bigger than the guy who told me "I'll make sure and bill you for 2 hours on my timecard". Now I know there are some shady shops out there and if this happened repeatedely then I would cry foul. Just my .02
