What type of dwelling do you have that has 208v. Are these 3 phase services. 3500 watt elements is definitely unusual around here.

208 volt services for dwelling units are very common in large multi-unit buildings. Each unit gets a single phase panel supplied with 208/120 single phase from the 208Y/120 services. Also in some city areas 208Y/120 networks are used with each building supplied 208/120 single phase.

This is the reason most, if not all dwelling unit appliances are rated for 208-240 such as dryers, ranges baseboard heaters etc.

It's a 30 story condo building. Made the first final inspection on one of the units and and he had the water heater on a 30a 2-pole and he was quite upset when I told him that he needed a 25a. Now the contractor is having trouble finding 440 25a 2-pole breakers.

I bet someone is doing a lot of cussing. Are your ears ringing? :D

If the supply house doesn't take all those back(ouch!), he may never need to buy another 2p 30 again.:smile:

EDIT: Looked it up. Does the water heater show max OCPD? Then wouldn't 422.11(E)3 come into play?

3500/208 x 150%=25.24--->30 amp brkr.

Any other circumstances aside, I find this quite a burden to put on a EC for a puiney if at

all a violation. I agree that 422.11(E)(3) allows the 30a 2pole c.b..

Could you explain your concern in the difference in saftey between the 25a and the 30a ?
