Came across a new one.Water heater 4500/208 come with a 4/11 box to make hook up and sticker on tank saying we must use the extra box.Even my inspector today said he never seen it before.Any idea as to why? My best guess is box fill on the typical water heater junction area.
 
You're still using 10s, I assume, so why wouldn't the junction box in the heater be fine?

Isn't that 'box' in the heater outside the scope of the NEC anyway?
 
If I was to guess, I'd guess that there was some design snafu that the UL had an issue with, and the inclusion of a 4-11 was an easy workaround for this model. That's a total guess.

will get model number and make.Same box is on 2 differant models.

Can you install a 30 amp DP switch as your disco in that box and eliminate the need for an external disco. Not sure how many suppliers would carry a switch cover for a 4 11/16 box.

I think this is what they are getting at. Maybe the switch and cover aren't with it cause sometimes its within sight of the breaker?

Yes you could,but you also could simply have a breaker lock and not need one.This involves RHEEM and not just one model #.Real problem is plumber lost one of the boxes.They wanted me to remove sticker saying i needed it,sorry but no can do,my boss would be all over me if i ever did that.Inspector never seen this before.Part of my question is why a 4-11 and not a 1900.
