I have a job to upgrade a service. the old one does not have a bond to the water pipe and the water pipe is not accessable close to the new panel. However the new ground rods will be driven within 2 ft of the water pipe. can we bond this to the ground rod driven?

Re: water pipe bond

  If your driving ground rods 2' from the water pipe it must be pretty close to the panels, unless your putting the ground rods far far?away from the panels. Seems like a strange one to me.

It is fairly close to the panel I was just trying to avoid running an additional wire back through the wall with the service conductors.
Just an easy way out if it is acceptable.

Re: water pipe bond

Unless the original rod has sentimental value, lose it for your two new ones close to the water pipe. :)

Edit to add: Your finished product will result in a new service connected to the water pipe, and two rods, correct?

Yes as long as the size of the grounding electrode conductor going to the ground rods is sized the same as if you were going to the pipe.

Example, For a 200 amp service a #4 copper would be installed to the water line.
Install #4 to the ground rods and jump from the rods with a #4 to the water line.
