Installed a new service to a dwelling with a remote well. Plastic waterline to house. I drove 2 ground rods & bonded the nearest cold water pipe(1/2"). Inspector said that I have to bond the water within 5' of entry whether plastic or metallic & that I have to bond to the largest water pipe. Have I been doing this wrong for 25 years?

Re: Water pipe bonding location

No, you have not been doing it wrong for 25 years. If the water entering the building is copper, the 5' rule applies. If it is plastic then goes to copper, the bond can occur at any accessible location. 250.104(A).

Thanks Ryan,
Is there anything about the size of the water pipe tobe bonded? I have never heard anything about size, aways went to nearest cold water.

Re: Water pipe bonding location

I am not clear what pipe is bonded. It sounds like the "cold" water pipe you mention is smaller and is therefore not the main. In the jurisdiction where I live, the main water supply plastic line must become metallic before entering the house and must be bonded within 5'. the nearest water line to the panel may not satisfy the bonding rules unless it is where the water first enters the house as main supply.

other jurisdictions may interpret this differently, but it sounds like the inspector is interpreting it the same as in my jurisdiction.

Re: Water pipe bonding location

If the water pipe meets this below, it is an "electrode",
250.52 Grounding Electrodes.(A)A metal underground water pipe in direct contact with the earth for 3.0 m (10 ft) or more..........
and the 5' requirement applies.

If the water pipe enters the building in plastic, then converts to metal, it would fall under
250.104 Bonding of Piping Systems and Exposed Structural Steel.
(A) Metal Water Piping......
and there is no mention of "where" this bonding is required other than it is to be accessable.
