Re: Water Pipe Bonding

Roger,
Dillon, one thing the change in the 05 NEC wording means is, if there is a concrete incased electrode in the slab it must be used even if (for the sake of conversation) it is not available.
Not if it is in a slab, only if in a footing or foundation.

Re: Water Pipe Bonding

There is also a change in 250.52 (A)(7)

2002 (7) Other Local Metal Underground Systems or Structures. Other local metal underground systems or structures such as piping systems and underground tanks.

2005 (7) Other Local Metal Underground Systems or Structures. Other local metal underground systems or structures such as piping systems, underground tanks, and underground metal well casings that are not effectively bonded to a metal water pipe.

According to the 05 cycle we are required to use the metal well casing if it is not bonded to the water pipe
:)

Re: Water Pipe Bonding

Sorry, this is a classic case of reading only one post instead of the entire thread. After going back reading the complete thread I think I would be better to go back to the round pen.

Re: Water Pipe Bonding

I don't believe changing the the term from "available" to "present" changes the intent or the requirement, nor does changing it back.

Re: Water Pipe Bonding

Bryan, see ROP 5-118 from Thomas Garvey and his substantiation HERE and then check out the comment on this proposal HERE.

It will take a while to open.

If you are using a dial up connection, you will want to down load them for future use. (You probably have already done so :) )

Re: Water Pipe Bonding

As luck would have it, I just walked out of a Code Seminar on Art 250 (conducted by a memeber of CMP1)
Perhaps I misunderstood him, but the well casing was discussed at length. As I understand it, the change in '05 of 250.50 removed "premises" to help clarify that a well casing located on the premises but not in the building was not required to be used as a grounding electrode and was not included in the "bonded together" requirement of 250.50. It is included in grounding electrodes that MAY be used when no other electrodes are available.
Did I misunderstand?
