wattage on a 240v circuit?

I was wondering, we used to always put 2 8' 2000 watt baseboard heaters on a 240v 20a circuit... was this wrong? What is the maximum wattage you can put on a 240v 20a circuit? Is it the 80% rule? 16a x 240v?

Arrogant, or just 'set in his ways'?
 
this site is awesome! I am never disappointed.... I ALWAYS recommend it! I have gotten many answers to questions that are difficult to find answers to.

Oh, and I mean specifically TWO j-men I learned under--ARROGANT, but I will say MOST are just set in their ways. After all, I am until I find a better answer here :)
 
I noticed through my helper years that the two 'mechanics' I worked with the most knew the hardware well enough, but varied a great deal in their understanding of electrical theory.

One was an ex-sailor, complete with Popeye-esque forearms, and the other was married to the owner's daughter. The former could do anything he was told, and the latter could do a load calc.

I knew enough to know what to believe and what to question. I did learn a lot. I wouldn't have called either one arrogant, but neither one was ever wrong. If you don't believe me, you can ask them.
