What seems to get people is an electric water heater because it isn't always obvious when it is "on".Yeah, the old "the lights work when the oven is on" mystery.
Had a call from someone at a time when we had widespread outages because of an ice storm, they tried backfeeding their panel from a portable generator with only 120 volts to one pole position (might been backfeeding a receptacle, can't remember exactly how they were connecting anymore). Complaint basically was the furnace won't work, some things work fairly fine others seem to be powered yet not correctly. Backfeed through water heater is what was effecting the furnace and other items that didn't work quite right. Of course also had to tell them about how that's not really how you should power your house from a generator.
