Re: welding cable ampacities

steve66, I don't have a current code book with me at this time  . If you don't mind could you elaborate on 527.4(b) and the exception?

Re: welding cable ampacities

Per 527.4 (B), temporary feeders can be cable assemblies, or multiconductor cords or cables of a type in table 400.4 for hard or extra hard usage. (My wording). And the handbook commentary says all tempory wiring methods have to be approved by the AHJ.

Exception to 527.4 (B): Single insulated conductors shall be permitted only for emergencies and tests and only where accessible to qualified persons (edited by me to make shorter typing).

Thats the 2002 NEC. I just looked in the 99 NEC, and Article 527 doesn't appear there.

If you use a multiconductor cord or cable assembly instead of single conductors, it can generally be used for temporary wiring (not just tests or emergencies) and access doesn't have to be limited to qualified persons.

Re: welding cable ampacities

Art 527 was Art 305 in the '99 and previous editions. It appears it will move again in 2005 to Art 590.

Why would they move an entire article??? I know the whole book got restructured in 2002, but to move it again??

Re: welding cable ampacities

I remember the discussion on 305-527-590 from the 2002 Cycle. It was moved from 305 as it wasn't a wiring method, 527 wasn't the best location, but it would have to do. Looks like 590 is it.

MGB, is this in a CO wholly occupied/operated by you know who? Is there a permit involved? Contact Scott Bowmaster.
