I don't have a lot of experience with well pumps (most of my area is on "city water"). I was asked to check out a well pump that's tripping the 40A 2-pole circuit breaker (240V single phase service). I traced the problem to the control cablel (14-2 UF cable) that goes about 100ft to the pressure tank. The black wire shorts to the ground wire under Megger testing. The well pump control box has a contactor that uses line voltage (240V) for the coil.
The question is, is there any code exception that allowed the installer to use 14 GA wire for the 240V run to the pressure switch (this switch leg activates the contactor coil) when it's only protected by the overall 40A 2-pole CB??
Thanks,
Mark
