Definition of Wet Procedure Locations in NFPA 99 2012 3.3.184 "The area in a patient care room where a procedure is performed that is normally subject to wet conditions while patients are present, including standing fluids on the floor or drenching of the work area, either of which condition is intimate to the patient or staff".
Question is: Do the devices need to be rated for wet locations, ie in-use covers, gasketed covers, etc? Are there specific codes for wiring in Wet Procedure Locations? Reason I ask, most ORs are Wet Procedure Locations but I have never seen an OR wired as a wet location. Normally there are regular receptacles with stainless steel covers and some have Wiremold ran in them. We recently had a Joint Commission survey and they wrote up one OR that had a four square surface mounted and they said it violated NFPA 70 but they couldn't reference what code. They said to fill in the holes and make it waterproof. I believe that the inspector is getting confused between Wet Procedure Locations and Wet Locations

Never seen a 4 square surface mounted receptacle in an OR.

Most everything that can be sealed is usually sealed to allow cleaning, and to prevent airborne dust and bacteria from settling and becoming a breeding ground.

Receptacle slots and the ground connector are usually just left open, although I'm not sure why that's allowed. Maybe its just not practical to cover them. Weatherproof covers seem like they would just create more places for stuff to harbor in the hinge and springs and such.
