(2)Fixture Wire.
Fixture wire shall be permitted to be tapped to the branch circuit conductor of a branch circuit in accordance with the following:
(3) 20 ampere circuits-14 AWG and larger


What does this actually mean.

After reading this subsection over again, and also reading 402.10 and 402.11 I think I understand this.

240.5(B) is for the connection to the branch circuit. Such as, if the fixture is hanging from a very high ceiling. The branch circuit wiring (12 AWG) is in and stops at the outlet box in the ceiling, and the fixture wire (18, 16, 14 AWG, is permitted to be smaller than the branch circuit wiring)is from the lighting fixture itself, up the fixture chain, and permitted to be spliced to the branch circuit wiring in the ceiling box.


If I am correct, what about 15 amp circuits??? Could we do this with 14 AWG in the branch circuit wiring??

I think this article pertains to the physical wiring within a light fixture. Since the only load the fixture wire will see is the actual load of the attached fixture, and short circuit current if attached fixture experiences a ground fault. I hope this makes sense :cool:
