Hello, all I have so far is a few photos but I think this must be an old Challenger panel, I would like to add a 50 amp double pole or maybe even a 60 amp for a EVSE install. Does anybody know what modern breaker would work? Thank you

Oh, sure, now you show the empty spaces. (;))

I took all the tandems to indicate the panel was full.

Probably Siemens or Eatons; check the label.

There's still the available capacity to consider.

Sorry about that Larry, I had to choose 2 of three photos, limitations of the platform I suppose and yes I thought the same thing when I saw that photo with all the tandems. Regarding the capacity I still need to confirm that, the owner is calling the poco in the morning for a demand load reading or I will have to figure that out, hopefully with the optional method. So if on the Eaton or Siemens breaker it says TYPE A then I should be good to go?

Most likely type BR is a listed replacement for those. I think people in the past have posted a note from Eaton indicating that BR is good to replace Challenger type A.

That would be my first choice, too.
Okay well thank you both for your input, BR sounds great. I'll have a look tomorrow and post my findings. I think there was a Type MP-T in the top of the the panel, 60 amp dbl pole for the A/C. Wasn't Westinghouse, Challenger and Murray all bought up by Cutler Hammer then CH bought up by Bryant then BR by Siemens then Siemens by Eaton, I'm getting dizzy, kkkkk

Challenger was bought by Eaton for the breaker line (the old Sylvania interchangeable). They changed the breakers to the Eaton CL “classified” breaker line because they were tested and listed in most competitor panels and a number of defunct brands like Crouse Hinds, T&B, etc.

Eaton also cross-listed their BR breakers as Type C (for Challenger), so they work too and they are less expensive than the CL line.

Eaton BR, & Eaton CL, are two different product lines, with CL, being more costly then BR, the OP would be best served by using the BR, EZ to find, the listed replacement, & cheaper,

This one is listed for your panel. I only have one left in stock.

Thank you Jraef, that's great news. Is there readily available documentation that you know of for the inspector should he require it or does it specify on the breaker itself? Thank you all
