What can be used as a raceway?

I have a voltage regulator that is about 10 feet long. I have to run 4-400mcm conductors from one end to the other where they will terminate on the far end of the voltage regulator cabinet. It is completely sealed when access panels are installed. My question is it code legal to use the voltage regulator cabinet as a raceway or should I run conduit from the surge suppressor cabinet to the end of the voltage regulator terminates. Is the voltage regulator a utilization equipment and can it be used as a raceway. There is plenty of room in the v. reg. and I would like to use the space. There is no chance of corrosion or mechanical damage. I am running the conductors from surge suppressor cabinet to voltage regulator to bypass switch (which is done with 6" nipples and then a main disconnect panel. I would like to come into my voltage regulator from the end nearest the surge suppressor instead of the end close to the bypass switch. But can I use about 10 feet of cabinet as a raceway. Thanks for any help.

I am so totally kidding. :D

Uh, 312.8 seems to be the closest thing that applies to your situation. I think what your doing is ok...? :D

Are you running a ground wire with your wires through the cabinet? I believe you might well have to do so and bond it to the cabinet.

I'm not sure if you are saying you are running 4 500MCM cables (3 plus G) or 4 500MCM per phase and no ground.

Re: What can be used as a raceway?

Did the manufacturer intend for wires to be ran through the cabinet? If so, a wireway or auxiliary gutter would probably be a more accurate term than a raceway. Wires can be ran in wireways and gutters without a raceway.

But I'm kind of confused. The voltage regulator has to have some space intended for wires to terminate at. Is this the same space?

If not, it it possible temperature could be a problem? Does it get very hot in this cabinet?

Re: What can be used as a raceway?

Is this a listed voltage regulator? Its is designed for running conductors thru it? The concern is voiding the listing and creating heat it is not designed for.
