What certification is best for an inspector?

Just wondering what most of the inspectors on this site are required to have for certification. Some have their's from the IAEI, some from the ICC. Which is the most appropriate to have nowadays?
With so many states already having adopted the international codes and the ICC working so closely with each state towards a "reciprocity status" from state to state, what makes the most sense?:-? :)
 
I have both the ICC residential and commercial electrical inspectors certifications. I found it easier to get the ICC certs because I am a combination inspector and had to get 6 other ICC certifications to be fully certified. The State of Utah recognizes both the IAEI and ICC inspectors certifications.

All inspectors in Michigan shall register under the building officials and inspectors registration act, Act No. 54 of the Public Acts of 1986 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. (didn't list all sections). Electrical Inspectors are required to have Continuing Education to renew their license. A min of 4 hours of Administrative, 1 hour of Communications, 18 hours of Speciality , 24 hours of Technical. 12 hours of Plan Review optional. This is required every code cycle. One hour short and you have to re- register. All licensed electricians journeyman or master electricians have to take a 15 hour code update class every code cycle. Inspectors have to take the 15 hour code update as well. Michigan does not recognize any other license or reciprocity. All classes and instructors shall be approved by the State of Michigan.

CBO's like to see lot's of certifications. I would get all the major ones if I was starting over. ICC: Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building. Get the combo ones also. IAEI was partnered with ICBO on cert's but I don't know if ICC is nowadays. So to get the combo ones you probably have to have an ICC electrical.

If you are lucky enough to be a specialist inspector, then the others just show you are dedicated.

They often aren't the same thing, I imagine, but I would think that experience in the trade should be a requisite.
 
Thanks for the many replies. I've been working with Department of State for some time now towards a reciprocity plan for the international. Very slow in coming. Proper direction, though, IMHO. :)
