It looks like a surge arrestor that I have installed in panels before. Note the 1/2" nipple/locknut on the bottom. I dont think it is pocos equipment. I would definitely call them and ask tho.

I am guessing that it is a lightning or surge suppression device.

This thing is greater than 10 yrs old. I seen some specs with a 2 yr warranty. So I have offered to simply replace it with new when I do the service.

But, does anyone test these things?

Do they keep working after suppressing whatever?

If they want a new one I would offer to install a new one in the main panel where it is supposed to be installed If it is a TVSS like I think it is. Most of them are not reuseable. One good spike ant it is toast.

Right, the new ones that I have looked at all have LEDs that are supposed to indicate if the thing is still functional.

I guess the one that I have photographed may have LEDs on the back side of it. Need my ladder to see.

That is definitely a lightning/surge arrestor. Haven't seen any of those in years. Very common at one time and I think they were installed by the poco around here.
