Jim I think that overheated nut is a reflection on the the black plastic. Take a look at the second picture-- it may make it more obvious. It certainly was brown when I was there. :grin:

I got pretty close but didn't really look for any markings--- didn't like my face being in the panel...:grin:
 
Would this be considered a bolted fault. You wouldnt want to apply this to 480 and stick your head in the panel. However I do believe that this is in fact a varistor.
 
Can you shut off the main and see the writing on it?? I wonder if x10 allows this type of install I dont know much about it.

Are you looking to remove that? Have you seen anything in the system that would still lead you to believe this is something that you should leave installed?......or are you just cuirous as to why it may have been installed there in the first place?

cause I have a pair of side cutters that could.....
 
I see those installed in control panels quite a bit, presumably to keep counter EMF from big contactors dropping out from spiking the little relays.
 
I would feel like Dennis The Menace...my hands would just be wringing round and round until I could get some satisfaction on finding out what it was. I'm just curious like that.
 
I'm voting for an MOV also. Don't know why it would be used phase to phase though. They are a semi-conductor device that shorts when they reach a threshold voltage,typicaly 140 vts. Used to dump transients to ground. I have seem them explode when the over voltage was not so transient.:grin:

I can't say that I've ever seen one explode or the aftermath of such, but I've observed more than a few with a black hole in the side of them.

Event Horizon is the point of no return for a Black Hole. Like the point where you're sucked in so far you can't get back out. :smile:

I've seen the aftermath...usually the bare stubs of the leads with nothing in between.

My facilities (25-30 years old) have big red GE MOV bricks mounted behind their own door in our tubs. One or two have failed over the years absorbing spikes.
