Yes, in this area that is a common starting point. OK, so maybe my New England bias is taking over, and yes, wages are far lower in the rest of the country. But I just think it sends a bad message.

And yes, we do all start out as laborers but you still need mechanical skills and a brain from the very beginning to become an electrician.

Re: What is your rate for a 1st year HELPER

You can earn $9 an hour doing jobs that require no brain power whatsoever. Why is the starting wage of a skilled trade on par with landscaping?
I started my one guy at $16 per hr and thought of dropping to $13 or $14 an hour, not $9 or $10 an hour. And again remember we are not talking about skilled tradesmen, we are talking about someone with 2 arms and 10 fingers who doesn't know anything about the trade.

So relax yourself a bit...

Re: What is your rate for a 1st year HELPER

I'd start a green apprentice at about $11.00 if they other good qualities. Dependable, hardworking, presentable appearance, etc..

The problem with green electrical apprentices is that for several weeks or months they may have very little to contribute after the tools and materials are brought in. Give a landscaper a rake and shovel and if he is a worker he can contribute a lot immediately.

A mason can get a high school kid during the summer and the kid can mix mortar and carry bricks all day long.

I definitely view hiring a green apprentice as an investment. In the beginning it will cost you more that he is worth. It hasn't always paid off.

Sure, I'll get right on it.

It's obvious that I'm not going to agree with anyone here, so be it. The wages of this trade start out low and they stay low long after the apprenticeship is over. I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes this.

Yeah, and deal with 3% increases until you realize you have no future.
With a skilled trade there is a very bright future.

I would say $8-$9 minimum for completely green. $10-$12 for having a good clue.

I think thats what I was looking for. Pete I should have just called you.
Sometimes I get to generous with the ol'check book. My kind heart plays a big roll in that.

I need to separate business from personal a bit more. 2006 will bring a few changes.

Hope all had a great holiday...

Pete, I thought your on vacation..?

There is absolutely nothing wrong in being generous. If you can afford it and enjoy it you should do it. For most of us it's a dog eat dog world and we have to balance looking out for the employee and looking out for the business.

One thing for sure, you WILL NOT keep a great employee if you don't pay them well.

Good luck with '06.

Re: What is your rate for a 1st year HELPER

My area suffers from a supreme lack of skilled electricians. Even worse, is the lack of green help even remotely interested in learning the trade. Just getting a new guy with zero trade experience to show up to work on time every day is worth 10 or 11 bucks all by itself. If he actually is able to learn anything, he's got raises in his near future.

actually, it's spelled Rameses. (1/2 brother to Moses)
actually its not, that is a widely recognized alternative though as well as ramses, raamses etc..

it was commonly believed that the exodus occured under ramesses the great or the second but according to the timeframes in the torah and other documents and digs the new placement is that it occured during the reign of amenhotep II. thus making it impossible to be moses's half brother. all that besides the fact that its commonly accepted that moses was no blood relation to the pharaoh and was taken in by hsi daughter to be raised as royalty. but the time of the exodus is not know so anything is subject to change.

edited to correct amenhotep II spelling.
