I need to wire in (6) 50 amp max/ 38 amp min. heat pumps on a roof. My plan is to install a subpanel on the roof and feed each unit from there. Originally my plan was to oversize my feeders and put the panel on a 300 amp main breaker from the main 800 amp service. My only concern is I'm not positive if the 300 amp breaker is acceptable or does it need to be sized at 125% of the total load? Any help would be greatly appreciated since this would be a very costly mistake on my part.

Your MCA of 38 amps for each unit already has 125% added to the largest component (usually the compressor) so even if you used 38*6=228 your feeder would likely be oversized.
