I have an apartment that has three 200 amp meters. We are going to replace the pipe stem. What size wire will I need? The building doesn't have a big load, I didn't do the calculations but it is small.units with gas appliances. The inspector said 4/0 would be good but that seems rather small. What do you think?

Unless you are going to do the calculations go with the inspector, he probably knows more about it than what you have given here.

This is ahead of the meters, right? If so it's probably fine.
In this area there are 600 Amp 120/240 Volt systems that
have been served with 4/0 Cu for decades. With gas
appliances your inspector is probably right that this will
be fine. (Is it in a conduit or exposed cable, I could look it
up in our engineering specs. to see what the minimum
we would require now is if you want if I can find it) The
only concern I would look into is the motorized load (pumps,
refrigerators, AC's, etc.)
