What the heck is type NM anyway?

I know what the code book says about it but I have never seen it let alone used it. Why not just use UF if the conditions are to be wet or damp?

Yeah that was supposed to be NMC, I have actually heard of type NM (never used it though )

You ever try and strip out UF

I figured UF might be more expensive, and the stripping did cross my mind, even though i dont have any trouble stripping UF. Just was curious, I guess its one of those things ive never seen or used in my electrically - sheltered geographic area (along with mineral insulated cable, copper USE, IMC, and still waiting to use one of those wire sretchers....)

Is NMC available? Who makes it? If some one has a 1 ft length they could send me I would appreciate it.

First, I have to admit to being an electrical geek. I have surfed the websites of wire and cable manufacturers numerous times and I have never seen a listing for Type NM-C.

From memory, none of the 5 major NM cable manufacturers (Southwire, Essex, Encore, Cerro and United Copper Industries) offer it.

NMC and NMS are not commercially available. I spoke with a cable manufacturers rep at a seminar, and he made mention that NMC could be purchased by special order.

I am not sure why NMC is still in the NEC, but NMS was used for the original "smart home" wiring and may one day gain it's original fame

Type NM stands for NonMetallic. NMC is just simply UF cable without a direct burial listing. NMC is no longer made because of the Keep It ( Simple Stupid ( KISS )principle.

Type UF in 14/2 and 12/2 is not that hard to strip but you do have to cut it about 4 inches longer so that you can dig into it with a knife and then pull on the wires with pliers.
