A guy I used to work with did some experiments on how far you can send RS232 data over STP cable.
Conventional wisdom says 50 feet, but that is based on using cable with maximum capacitance and some stated speed.
His experiments indicated that you can easily extend the distance to 1000 feet using lower capacitance cable and/or lower baud rates.
They even did experiments with UTP cable and found it worked quite well at moderate distances and baud rates.
