Are there any typical cases or "rules of thumb" when deciding whether to use a fused disconnect switch versus a regular disconnect switch? I know that you should go by the equipment's nameplate, but that information isn't always available.

Thanks!!

A fused disconnect is only required when overcurrent protection is required at that point of supply. Otherwise, it is completely a design consideration.

A fused switch may also be required when the available fault current is high...most non-fused disconnets have a fault current rating of 5,000 amps.
