I know it's here somewhere. Where in the '02 NEC is the article or exception that allows the reidentification of conductors for switchloops ie. reidentifying the white conductor in type NM cable to feed the switch.

Thanks, I glossed right past it the 1st time I looked (old age). Here's my real question; I've got a 4wire (wht, blk, red, blu + grd) MC cable existing that I want to use for 2-2wire 120volt circuits in a computer room. Is there any provision in the NEC that will allow me to reidentify the blue conductor and use it as a grounded (white) conductor. It would save a lot of time and expense if it is permitted.

Nope. It's not permitted. But do the two circuits require separate neutrals? You could share one neutral if the circuits aren't on the same phase.

'05 NEC 200.6(E) Exception No. 1 does under the "conditions of maintenance and supervision" clause. I don't have an '02 NEC for reference.

I agree with Smart. If you can install it as per the exception than it is permitted. I retract my original blanket statement saying that it is not permitted.
 
Thanks all. I guess I new the answer all along but I was thinking that if there are situations where you can reidentify a white wire then similar situations should allow you to reidentify a black or blue one. This cannot be wired as a multiwire branch circuit because of the equipment involved (manufacturer specs) and the alternative of running a new branch circuit will be VERY costly. The customer will probably find an EC who will ignore the NEC and do it the easy cheaper way and I really can't blame him. But I've worked hard over the last 32 years to get my reputation of being expensive but worth it so it's not going to change on this job.

I was trying to use an existing mc cable rather than having to run a whole new run, fishing a wall etc. But thanks. I'm really enjoying this blog thing.
