It depends on what risk you are mitigating and how important (or expensive) the damage you're preventing is.

While I would stick with known brands, the key here is the application and listing to UL 1449. Surge arresters are now officially known as surge protective devices and are classed as types depending on the application. It should be noted that type 1, 2 and 3 are often used together to create a system. Here is a paper that may help: http://www.nemasurge.org/wp-content...cation-Considerations-Rev-Date-01-31-2013.pdf

I use the ones from this company. I usually buy 6 at a time and keep 2 in my truck at all times.

Model # SYC-120/240-T2

I can't tell you how good they work because I've never had one fail and besides, you really don't know they're working. They just sit there with the power indicator on. They also have commercial 3-phase models.

How much do they cost?

Sycom

Sycom

We buy the same units from the local supply house (CED consolidated electrical distributors) and pay a little over $35 each.

I usually buy 3-4 at a time.

We have also been happy with them, no problems etc.
Sycom is also very helpful with specs for new jobs and very easy to talk to.

Sycom also offers training, our shop did it early am via phone. It was worth the 20 minutes a day for iirc 4 or 5 classes.
