white noise systems

I've been asked to install a background noise/speech privacy system that consists of a control unit that is the source of the white noise and small noise emitters that mount in a ceiling tile. The noise is a whooshing sound like HVAC.

I do not have the electrical specs on the system, however the control unit plugs into a standard wall receptacle with a standard low voltage tramsformer.

Question: Does the electrical code apply to these systems?

Re: white noise systems

These are called sound masking systems and yes the code would apply. This would be no different than a paging or music system and wiring would need to comply as well as possibly the speakers.

Re: white noise systems

Indeed, treat them like a PA system, except its less complicated then even a PA system. I have seen some where a transformer is installed in the closet or wire cabinet and a 18/2 wire is sent to the unit. You can run wires on bat wings and rings in drop ceiling if the structure is inaccessible.
