Who likes Colorado Jim?

Obviously, I like them:

If you take a good look at Larry's excellent installation, you'll see why we love to use them too. How else could you install that amount of cables and support them too without using old Jim?

It's not so much that I like Jim, it's that I don't get much choice depending on job conditions.

It's difficult to stay 1 1/4" back from the edge with multiple MC cables on the same stud without Jim.

That are the metal enclosures calles/manuf? I assume some sort of multiple box arrangement.

Why the MC cables? Occupancy? Local codes? In wood construction?

Yeh, I full of it today - questions, that is.

Yeh, you am.

The boxes are the exact same thing as 4"sq's, but they come in 3-, 4-, and more gangs. The plaster rings are made one gang smaller than the box, but have screw knock-outs that match up with the same-gang size box.

In other words, they're six gangs wide, and I used 5-gang rings. The extra width comes in handy for conductor space as well as knockout count. Makes them easier to mount, too. I used pop-on Caddy clips.

MC because "conduit" was spec'ed. It's a restaurant/bar. I used EMT everywhere the wiring's exposed, except for the rear of the building (behind, where the panels live), and MC for the rest. It sure is faster (and more forgiving!) than EMT!

This is the job where I took the pix I posted in the how-do-you-label-the-panel thread a couple of months back.

nice job larry but its hard to tell from the pic.....is that MC behind the stud or passing through????? I pray its passing through it.
Thanx, and it's behind. There's an inch, plus or minus, between the studs and the old plaster-on-brick walls. The horizontal runs are Caddy-clipped to the plaster with blues-n-screws, at a max spacing of 6'. We passed every inspection first trip.

Larry,
What are those clips you used to mount those switch boxes?

I have a hard time mounting these w/ Caddy TSGb16's because they are neither 1 3/4 or 2 1/8 like 4S boxes, they are somewhere in between. Looks like you have something from caddy in there, but I can't tell exactly what.

Mike

Nice install but I hope the wall covering is at least 5/8 in. thick.Ive used many of those boxes and with 1/2 in. drywall if they are flush with the front of the studs they extend beyond the drywall almost an 1/8 of an inch.

Mike, they're the Caddy 350, seen here: http://www.erico.com/products/CADDYcfcScrwOnBxSuprt.asp

They clip to the front edge of the box, so box depth doesn't matter, and they have just enough offset so the box cover and screwheads are within the plane of the stud face.

Allen, the drywall was 1/2", but as I said above, there's enough setback so the face of the ring doesn't protrude from the drywall, and there's also no drywall bulge. I wish all mounting methods worked as well.
