why automatic transfer switches are so expensive

why automatic transfer switches are so expensive, I want one for my 2.5 kv genrator for small home, is there any cheap alternative?
There are no regulatory UL in our country so I can experiment a bit.
any help will be appriciated.
I have a manual transfer switch at the moment which cost me 20$, but power outages are so frequent that I 'm fed up with starting the genrator and turning it of and switiching between genrator and utility.
