why would an electrical conduit get hot

OP anittechnical never answered any more questions?

This exact scenario will of course happen if one decides to run vfd output wires individually thru conduits rather than together. Might this be the case?
 
I've seen instances where a load management system was installed with lots of single-wires going through the same nipple causing the conduit to get noticeably warm.

I've had just this come up twice recently. Contractor ran all lines of supply through 1 EMT nipple to the relay panel and all the loads back out through another EMT, in other words a switch loop. The neutrals did not follow the circuit so of course you have inductive heating. The lesson learned for him was that a switch loop in a ferrous metal race raceway must go out and come back in the same raceway.
