Hello,

I am new to this message board so please excuse me if this is not the right area for this subject.

For those of you who don't know WI has recently made it possible for Residential work only Electricians to obtain their license earlier than the 5 year Journeyman license. You can now obtain your Residential Journeyman's License with 3 years of documented 1000 hours.

The question now, does this license apply for a Residential/Commercial Project? For example, would a Residential Journeyman have jurisdiction on a huge apartment complex with some commercial work involved, but mostly apartment units. Romex will be used for the majority of the building.

Any advice or answers will be very helpful! Please let me know if you need anymore information.

Thanks.

You would have to call the WI board of examiners but my guess is that you would be limited to residential work only

A residential journeyman electrician can do electrical wiring not associated with dwelling units if they are under direct supervision of a licensed master or journeyman electrician per SPS 305.40(2)(b). If they are not under the direct supervision of a master or jouneyman they would be limited to work inside the dwelling unit only. Direct supervision means the master or jouneyman electrician is present at the work site.

How can I get a Wisconsin electrical contractors license?

The application is at the DSPS website dsps.wi.gov. Hover over License/Permits/Registrations and then click on Trades Professions. Under electrical you will find Electrical Contractor. Its really just a registration, anybody can obtain the credential, but you do need it to do work in Wisconsin.

Will my Minnesota master license qualify me to be licensed as an EC in Wisconsin?

Anyone can get the contractors license. But you would need a Wisconsin electricians license to do the work, and a Wisconsin master electrician to provide general supervision. Wisconsin and Minnesota do not have a reciprocity ageement for electrical licensing.
