Will I be able to gain employment?

Wannabe - I agree with the majority here, that if you get the opportunity you have to prove yourself. I'd be interested to hear if you do have your drivers license, as without it, it's going to be tough unless you initially get a job as a maintenance electrician. This would allow you to stay in one place, assuming you can arrange a daily ride.

I hope you are still attending something like AA, as that would be a positive message should this topic come up with a prospective employer. And most importantly, don't get caught in a lie if being questioned on the DUI.

Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.

Let us all hear how the interview went.

It is an uphill battle, but if you prove your worth to the company I don't see that it will be a problem. I've heard of a few companies doing that in my area to great success for the part of the electrician. The best thing is to be up front and honest about what happened and the circumstances if any.

The DL issue is just that and it affects more than work. I agree with the posts I have read keep a positive attitude and move forward your past is just that the past. Good luck and keep trying. The real loser is the one who never tried.

I wan't to thank everybody for all of the great advice. I'm sorry I didn't get back sooner. I actually didn't get to have the interview until yesterday. The result is, well I wasn't offered the job right on the spot, so I still don't know. I think the interview went pretty well but I'm a little doubtful about getting the job. There is going to be a background check and he did mention to me that it is possible that there could be a problem do to in his word, "some pretty tight clearances required". Due the fact that they do alot of work on military installations and some schools. He mentioned that all the work they do is prevailing. I hope my background doesn't stop me from being able to work on prevailing jobs. Anyway I am supposed to call them back next week. So I will update you as to the situation. Thank you everybody.

It will all depend on the level of clearance needed. I don't think our beloved President could get a top level clearance if he wasn't President.

The good news is this, not all prevailing wage jobs require any sort of clearance. If all else fails it good to know that you can still run for President.

I had a DUI about 15 years ago or more and passed HMS background check when I worked for another contractor 3 years ago on the new DHL hub at the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati Airport.
If BC & AG can get security clearance, anyone can.
As long as you have a drivers license & no felonys on your record you should pass a back ground check.

Hey and don't forget that background checks don't necessarily mean that anything you ever did bad excludes you.

Taxi drivers in my state must meet with the police officer in charge of hackney licenses. They do a background check on you. They have only three things in mind and nothing else matters. You probably couldn't get a hackney license but we are talking about electrical work here.

The three things the cops want to find out about you before they allow you to pick up strangers and drive them to destinations:

1. Have you ever committed a sex crime
2. Have you ever committed a violent crime (including robbery)
3. Have you ever been convicted of a DUI

These are OBVIOUS things to look for when allowing somebody to drive a car and pick up random people.

The background check for an electrician probably is more like:

1. Have you ever been convicted of stealing. (anything)
2. Has a previous employer ever had to bring any charges against you?
3. Have you been suspected in a terror plot

Of course there is more, but see how different the priorities might be for different jobs?

Well, I got the job and I start Monday morning. I really can't believe it. I though for sure they would pass me up. I think it was my persistence that actually got me the job. I called them 3 days after my interview to follow up. They told me they were still background checking the applicants. Then 3 days later I called back again. Later that night H.R. called me back asked me to come in the next day and fill out some paperwork and do a drug screen. I don't know if they would have hired me if I didn't keep calling them back. I think it is a great company. All they do is prevailing work. I hope I do ok. Actually I hope I do great. I'm ready to go. I've bought a nice startup set of tools. My belt & bags and boots. Thanks everybody.

Good idea. I'm so green. My first day I'm probably come home with blisters on my hands and feet. Yup brand new boots. I was actually avoiding wearing them because I thought nobody would hire me and I would want to return them.

Get to work on time. Do what you are told. Keep your mouth shut. You will be surprised how far this will take you.
