Wire exiting breaker box?

I have to add a 220V outlet in a garage near the breaker box.
Is it legal to run the wires out the bottom or sides of the box to the outlet as long as the wires are protected from the metal edges of the box? I have always seen the wires exiting out the top of the box.

Yes, use a bushing. Your local electrician should have one to spare.
