wire nut melted in bathroom light/heater/fan

any ideas on a red nut melt down. it had 1 12 gauge neutral to two whites on the heater/fan.

It wasn't correctly installed. That is it wasn't tight enough. You should see some twist in the wire below the skirt of the wirenut. The instructions for one brand tells you to tighten until there are two full twist visible below the skirt of the wirenut.

thanks, but the attached wires were 2 braided copper from the fan unit. am i still supposed to make a twist in the single 12 gauge copper wire?

not arguing, i do believe the nut wasn't tight enough, just asking.

About the only way that can happen is if the load is greater than the wire can handle or the connection is loose. I don't think the load was greater than the wire can handle.
