As long as the customer agrees and covers the cost difference, I would recommend #6 cu (for the entire circuit) for the possibility of a future tub replacement alone.
A spa will definitely run for more than three hours upon initial startup.
Unlike a range, etc., the unit draws full power almost every time it runs. You can always use a 40a breaker now, and swap it for a 50 if the need arises.
