so a number 8 thhn could be protected by a 50 amp breaker in conduit? #1 xhhw is good for 100 amps in conduit right maximum OCP 100? Correct?

Yes if all terminations and equipment is rated 75C. I didn't check the table-- I just did and my answer holds true barring any de-rating etc
