I have a question about stapling as I was misinformed on the subject. In a normal wiring run of outlets in a wall, does each wire going into the box need to be stapled (within 8 inches?)if the wire going to the outlet is coming through a hole in the stud less than 4 inches away? What are the stapleing requirements in this situation?

Have your licesned and insured electrical contractor either move the box or move the hole.
Each wiring method has its own requirements for secring and supporting.

Bottom line is if there is nm passing through a vertical stud or a horizontial fire block it constitutes secured if within required distance

As for the other posters, I appreciate your advice, but I don't beleive this small wiring project requires a contractor.
That is what I was told, but the inspector said it needed to be stapled. I've gotten conflicting reports on this from the building office. Stapling a wire that is 4 inches from a 1/2 inch hole seems a little ridiculous.Originally posted by allenwayne:

I must apologize, I am not an electrician and it seems I have posted in a forum that is for electricians to help other electricians. Not for helping a homeowner with a simple electrical permit. I failed to see the following posted on the site:

As I read 334.30(A), I'd say you're right if the inspector agrees.
I think most inspectors would only approve of a staple as "...securely fastened in place by an approved means..."
Holes in wood don't seem too "fastening" to me.
Edit to add: Both terms "supported" and "secured", especially when used together but never defined, seems like an oversight to be.
I'd say "supported" implies gravity and wood, whereas "secured" implies staples, cable ties, etc. IMO. Perhaps I'll whip out my proposal pen.
