Man admits copper thefts
Louis Galvan

A man arrested last month after he was caught with 1,425 feet of stolen copper wire has admitted to stealing about 32 miles of copper wire from hundreds of city light poles during an approximately two-month period, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer announced Thursday.

Dyer described the suspect, Dean Brockwell, 39, of Fresno, as a methamphetamine user who told investigators he had been stealing about one mile of copper wire about three or four times a week -- usually in the northwest Fresno

(I suspect what the suspect was doing was to open the handhole and jerk the wires out from the head. Some street lighting systems have master photocontrols and during the day the lights are off. A white van with a amber top light, reflective vest, who would know?)

Was he set up to strip it as he pulled ?

There are highways in New York City that have been dark for years because someone stole the copper wiring and they never replaced it.

Not surprising since they also used coffee cans and bailing wire to patch subway car resistor shunts together to make service.I know I worked for the NYCTA.

Sounds like he was just breaking even. He'd need the speed just to maintain the energy to do that much work! :D

I've heard a rumor that some scrap yards will now notify the police if anyone comes in with large amounts of wire scrap. There have been several instances, here in NJ, where copper thieves have stolen large service feeders days before they were due to be energized. Word to the wise : "pull 'em in and light 'em up" the same day. At least you'll have a better chance of catching the thief (toasted that is).

I remember back in the seventies, the plumbers would put in the copper pipes during the day and the thieves would remove it during the night.

you would think a guy that could pull 2 to 3 miles of wire a week could make more money doing a real job.

Meth adicts only know how to destroy not build.
welfare checks just arent enough to support there habit

This guy is about as classy as the cretins who just stole all of the Christmas lighting my city puts up every winter in a park for charity sleigh rides. I hope they tar and feather the @#$%#&'s when they catch them.
