What type of wire is the white wire in the attached picture? it seems to be crimped / flattened. Is it allowed to be used in temp or permanent installations?

Looks like a 2 conductor CL2 or thermostat wire. What does it say on it? Might be for 0-10 dimming and no, shouldn't be in the box with line voltage.
