Wireing in 2x4 stringers

I was told that i could not run wire through the 2x4 stringers in new construction. The home owner wants to use the attic space for storage. How do i run the wiring for the bedroom and bath lights.

A stringer is used to support a floor or roof.

It sounds to me like you are talking about a purlin that is used to break the span of a rafter.

Is your concern drilling through structural members?

I hope they're not use 2 x 4 floor stringers.

My mistake. Yes i need to drill through the purlin.

I see no problem with drilling a purlin, as long as it is less than 40% of the width of the stud, and no closer than 5/8" to the edge.

That,s what i thought,so i should not have to worry about the shear strength of the 2x4 then?
