When installing a wireway below a panel is the wireway restricted to the depth of the surface mounted panel above it (typically 6") because of working clearances or can it protrude a couple of inches? Example 8x8x48" wireway under three 208Y/120V panel baords??

If you read the article that Don referenced you will see that you're permitted to encroach on the working space up to 6". A panelboard used in conjunction with an 8X8 wireway would need to be a minimum of 2" deep.

I think that this concern is a left over from a previous code cycle where nothing was to be deeper than the Panel. Caused many a headache. Was changed to the current version.
