how do
you determine what is a j-box and what is a gutter/wireway.

Im not sure, one of the things i do is look at the drawings when a job starts and get familiar with what the architect uses to describe them. For example if there are multiple disconnect connected to a meter base it is connected by a wireway.. In resi we called them a rain tight gutter and that included any inclosure that was rectangular with an access on one side .
J box for me was always on a branch circuit of any kind where a circuit split to more than one location.
When it was for feeders it was called a pull box because that was its purpose, not for splices but a way to pull the wire..

And when i come across a 4 sq. that has 3 extension rings on it i call it a gutter just because i think its funny:lol:
