If I am a journeyman in ma can I work directly for a hvac company doing electrical work would my work be covered under the insurance if they hired me as a employee

Welcome to the forum.

The question is who would be the qualified contractor who applies for electrical permits?

If no permits will be obtained, why would they need a qualified journeyman electrician?

If you are doing electrical work for which you are qualified then I can't imagine that the company insurance would not cover your work as an employee. If you are doing other HVAC work for which you are not qualified, it might be a different story. I would also guess that it would generally be the company, not you, that would be legally and/or financially liable for any wrongdoing if you are an employee acting under their direction.

We're mostly electrician's here though, not lawyers. Massachusetts, I hear, has stricter laws about qualifications needed to do certain work.

MA requires a masters license if working for a non-electrical company. this came up when I was wiring burners/furnaces for an HVAC company. an inspector would not allow me to pull permits as a journeyman. fortunately I was able to reciprocate my NH masters license -- which took time. this was 5 or 6 years ago but knowing MA and ALL of their ridiculous laws I doubt very much it has changed

The answer is no for doing electrical work unless the company holds a masters and they have insurance for doing electrical work. There are several levels of HVAC licenses a legal company would hold and you yourself would need to hold to allow you to work on refrigeration equipment.
