Working out...let's get physical

This is going to place me as a geezer, which I don't think I am @ 49.
Pre-Geezer, ok... So I'm finding I need to lift weights, every4 days or
so. Doesn't take long or tons of weight. 30 reps, curls, bench press,
overhead, dumbbells. DO some backbends too, 30. takes under 10min.
Much easier to do electrical work on old houses...+

Right here.
I've bought a year's gym membership three times over the years, and have maybe visited 6 times total. Every time I went, all I could think about was all the other stuff I should otherwise be doing.

@ 29 I feel I need to start being more active outside work. I stopped doing the motocross scene 6 years ago. I just started mountain biking. I just picked this guy up http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/model/superfly I had no Idea how much i am out of shape. extremely fun. I am starting to feel so much better. For the past 3 years I have been working on the Utility figure, You know flat (Moderator's Note: an inappropriate term has been deleted), big belly, double chin thing.

I have been going to the gym regularly since I was 26 (when I quit smoking), I Rollerblade, bike, kayak pretty much in shape I like to think. We do battery installs regularly a few weeks back we were short handed and I Helped remove and reinstall 21,600 pounds of sealed lead acid batteries in 2 battery cabinets with top shelf head high. Had to unload truck move them into the building up and down stairs (no elevator) with 2 other men, DAMN NEAR KILLED ME. For the first time I thought to myself "I am getting to old for this crap".

Working out is important, but sometimes age still kicks your butt.

NEVER buy life time memberships in a gym I have 3 of them, I am still kicking and the gyms died (went bankrupt).

12 ounce curls do not count.

Brian, how often do you go to the gym? What time of the day do you normally go there and how much time do you spend each visit? It's 3:30am, and my day's just now getting started. I'm not sure when I'd even go to a gym. I guess the time I spend tapping on the keyboard on this forum might be better spent at the gym.

I try to go 3 to 4 times a week after work, usually take a 30 minute nap before hand. THOUGH I have been slacking in the last 3 months due to PLAIN LAZINESS.

I actually got up early to hit Ocean City MD. take a few sunrise pictures but alas it is cloudy outside so here I sit.

You have to make time for it. It's the only way it works. I value my time, just ask my customer$. :D

I started running again a few years ago.

I have run hundreds of road races since and three marathons. Marathon training takes up alot of time every week and especially weekends, but it's "me time". No work, no kids, no phone, nothing. There is nothing quite like heading out the door at 6:00 am on a Sunday and running for 3 hours. It's quiet, there are few cars, and there's no better way to see a city, a town where you live, and places you would normally never have a reason to drive through. Plus you can look at all the things you'd like to megger.

If work didn't allow me find time to do things I wanted to do, I'd find some other way of paying the bills. ;)

No matter how much running I do, a week of going full throttle roughing a house still kicks my ass.

When I kayak distances I get in a zone, no negative thoughts, no issues, NO CELL PHONE just a consistent stroke and an adjustment in tracking every so often.

I got tired of doing nothing. The day before I turned 47, my son & I started taking karate. We got our black belts Sept 20 this year. I will be 52 in January. Definitely more fun than a health club, IMO. Besides, I'm not pretty enough to join a health club.:D

Yoga sounded like fun and the stretches or poses feel good and the girls in the class were easy on the eyes. But after a year of weekly yoga class, I tore a muscle, slipped a disk, something in my back moving a pallet. I healed up in a couple of days. I quit the class and my office job, went back on my tools and my back is good.

Yoga is not just poses, its also about breathing and I'm proud to say my wife and I quit smoking cold turkey two weeks ago tomorrow. BTW, I am 43.

Good for you, I quit cold turkey when I turned 30, almost 4 years ago, the first week is the hardest, but the cravings lasted a year, but every month gets easier, then you get to a point where you cannot stand the smell of smoke and cant believe you ever did it. Good luck to you.

I was actually hoping to put a few pounds on as well, that never happened... :)

good for you man. Keep it up. I know how hard it is at first. Remember the key is not to cheat. Especially when your in the begining stages. Its really hard sometimes but you can do it. And youll see how your energy levels totally boost, and youll find that you get a more restfull sleep at night.

And it wont stop there. I felt so much better when I stoped (I smoked for 10 years and I honestly though I could never stop) that I decided to take it a step futher and I layed off the high sugar drinks and ate better. And the next thing I know Im running everyother day. I remember how tired I was all the time in the past.

Anyway keep up the good work and stay off them. Its not uncommon to cheat and this acually helps some people But IMO it just takes you longer to totally get free, as does the gum and patch.

This reminds me of a joke.

A young boy sees a very old man sitting on a porch on a rocking chair.

The young boy goes up to the old man and asks, "Sir, what is your secret to living a long life?"

The man answers "I never exercise, I only eat fatty foods, I smoke 3 packs of cigarettes day, I drink 2 bottles of hard liquor a day, and get 3 hours of sleep a night."

The young boy then asks "How old are you sir?"

The man answers, "32."
