hey guys what code exception would allow a panel to be put directly behind a door? the reason I ask is I went to help another [electrician] who put a panel directly behind the door when its swung open as im working in the panel this green helper slings the door and hits me square in the back thanks

Re: working space

There is no need to have an exception for something that is not prohibited.
As long as the clearances as outlined in 110.26 are adhered to then behind the door is not a problem.
:)

Re: working space

ok im not 3 ft wide when this door is opened it hits the panel therefore it violates the table in 11026a1 does it not?

Re: working space

It's kind of a judgement call but I think most inspectors don't have a problem with it. As long as there's no reason to expect that you won't be able to close the door to get access to the panel it's pretty much "readily accessible".

If the agruement is "what if someone puts something in the way of the door?"

You could also ask "what if someone puts something in front of the panel?" (Never seen that :( ).

Re: working space

I've been been working on a panel behind a door and been bumped by the door too. My current remedy is to kick by big straight screwdriver in tightly under the door while I'm working there. Only takes something scary happening one time to make me learn.

If you stop working on the panel nobody 'll need to use the door anymore. :D

While someone was working in the panel the door to the room would need to be closed. With the door closed would there be 30 inches wide and 36 inches deep around the panel? The fact that some one could open the door while it is being worked has nothing to do with the clearances outlined in 110.26.

Re: working space

110.26 is allows this installation. In 110.26 (B) Clear Spaces...When normally enclosed live parts are exposed for inspection or servicing, the working space, if in a passageway or general open space, shall be guarded...
When the panel cover is removed the door must be secured out of the working space. please do not allow the apprentice to be your means of guarding, as their attention span isn't to long!
