I had an interesting question from one of my fire protection colleagues. Fire pumps require a 36" working space. Can the fire pump working space be shared by the ATS/controller working space? I can't find anything about this in either NFPA 20 or the NEC. We are on the 2008 NEC with NYC amendments for this project.

Are you saying that the fire pump itself requires 36" of working space? How is it measured 36" all the way around, what about above? How can you bring the feed to the pump without entering the working space?

Well, with time comes clarity and understanding. The clearance for fire pumps is our internal "best practice" standard, not a code requirement, so the question is moot.
