WOW, any ideas?

Went into an attic to trace out a line and saw this!
This is for the bathroom exhaust fan, I'm not sure what the switch is in the SG box, the lever is facing down and there is nothing to control it from the bathroom. Any ideas why it was put there? As for the fan, I'd like to meet the guy to came up with that idea.

PS: the fan doesn't work. imagine that

I never would have taken it off, I mind my own business unless the HO hired me to touch it. ;)


edit, just reread your post, is that why you took it apart because the fan was not working?


Time to just sell them a new fan... :) and add a switch...

That puppy went into the favorites folder:grin: I heard a Keystone "unsmooth" light commercial yesterday. The lady said her husband was labeled as the "white trash" McGuyver. She told a story about her husband taking home a commercial 4' fan home from work that was given to him. He managed to mount it, cage and all as a ceiling fan, in their NEW home. Man, did we laugh at that one:grin:

Sidd, how do you post like that, thumbnails that can be enlarged?

it is the image hoster that I use, I need to find a way to post it normal size, but I have yet to do it. ... what do you use?
 
I worked for an electrical contracter that combined a can light and a remote bath fan, he cut a hole in the top of the can, manufactured a flange and drilled a series of holes inside the can for ventilation, the reason for this "invention" was that the customer didnt want to look at an ugly vent in thier bathroom ceiling. I refused to install it, but another employee did because he was afraid to tell the boss no, I stuck one of the companies stickers on it and after we were completed with the job, I told my boss what I did, It pissed him off, but I told him not to ask anyone to do anything he didnt want his name attached to.

I'm wondering, just how many beers were consumed during the design, build,and the install of this "New and Improved"- "Bucket Fan"!

Farmer's fix just like Grandpa used to make.

I see nothing wrong, he used a safety disconnect and plenty of duct tape.

Maybe it isn't an exhaust fan, but a blower to bring attic air into the bathroom. I know, it is an attic-mounted Rat Cuisinart !!!

Follow the rod that goes out the back of the box, whatever that hooks up

to is what turned the fan on.

there is nothing, or if there was as one time, it is now covered up.

do people call those a gang box in your area? around here its a handi box, and a gang box is a large metal container you put your tools in on the jobsite.

The flush handle of the toilet pushes down on a threaded rod that goes to the floor to a small see-saw switch which is hooked to another rod that extends all the way up to the ceiling bucket fan and connects to the pushrod that goes through the ceiling into the handybox switch which then turns on the bucket fan which exhausts the odiferious fumes at approximately 600cfm into the attic space. Stepping on the small see-saw switch with the left foot reverses the phase and neutral connections which reverse the air flow back into the bathroom. Patent applied for and under consideration by an esteemed panel of experts.:grin:

I will print that out and hand it to the HO, I will tell him I may need to replace his toilet handle for his fan to work properly

I can tell you how I do it. I make a miniature version of each image, name them "XXX.jpg" and "XXXsm.jpg", and store them on my server. Then it's a matter of using code. I'll use HTML 'gators' instead of brackets, so the code will show up for you.

<url=http://www.blah-blah.com/XXX.jpg><img>http://www.blah-blah.com/XXXsm.jpg</img></url>

This makes the link to "XXX.jpg" appear as the image "XXXsm.jpg".
